Through a Different Lens

When preparing for a trip, I always enjoy watching some films or reading a book to give me the flavor of a place. In preparation for our trip to Marfa, we created a little Marfa/Texas film festival for inspiration. These were our films:

MovieMontage

Giant (1956)

A sprawling epic. Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean. Filmed in Marfa. The cast stayed at the Paisano – a great hotel (where we stayed). Classic.

Hud (1963)

Paul Newman plays the bad seed. Love Patricia Neal in this. Gorgeous black and white cinematography. What can I say; some of us are more flawed than others.

The Last Picture Show (1971)

Quite the cast: Jeff Bridges, Cybill Shepherd, Ellen Burstyn, Cloris Leachman. Small town West Texas. The high school kids are coming of age in a town that is slowly dying. Adapted from a Larry McMurtry novel. Meditative.

Paris, Texas (1984)

A friend wondered if this would stand up after all these years. It does. Wim Wenders is genius. Inspired dialogue/monologues between Harry Dean Stanton and Nastassja Kinski. Gorgeous, moody Ry Cooder soundtrack es muy excelente. Oddly lovely and strange.

Now here we are, thinking about New Orleans. We checked out The Big Easy from the local library. We enjoyed it and went along for the ride even though it felt very dated and a bit cheesy. Looking forward to a few more flavors. And so it goes … Also on our New Orleans film list:

  1. A Streetcar Named Desire
  2. Angel Heart
  3. The Yellow Handkerchief
  4. Down by Law
  5. The Pelican Brief

Other possibilities: Cincinnati Kid, Cat People, Suddenly Last Summer, Live and Let Die, Interview with a Vampire, Pretty Baby, Walk on the Wild Side, Double Jeopardy, Easy Rider. Hmmmm, pretty eclectic list. What do you think? Let us know if you have any suggestions …

Looking forward to sharing photos and experiences soon!
